Handicrafts & Furniture Export Logistics in India
Fragile Packing, ISPM-15 Fumigation, CITES Compliance & Cost-Effective Global Freight
India is one of the world’s largest exporters of handicrafts and furniture, and Clearfast has been a logistics partner to this trade for over 20 years with an on-the-ground office in Moradabad, the Brass City of India, at the heart of the country’s handicraft belt. From hand-beaten brassware and carved wooden furniture to marble inlay, ceramics, and textiles, Clearfast connects artisans and manufacturers with buyers worldwide.
Handicrafts and furniture are deceptively difficult cargo. They are fragile, irregularly shaped, often high-value, and frequently made from materials such as wood, bone, horn, shell, and certain hides that trigger fumigation requirements or wildlife-protection controls at export and import. Clearfast handles export-grade packing, ISPM-15 wood treatment, CITES and quarantine compliance, and LCL/FCL consolidation decisions that keep freight costs cost-effective for low-density cargo, all in-house.

What Clearfast Provides for Handicraft & Furniture Export
Most freight forwarders treat handicrafts as generic cargo. Clearfast treats packing, compliance, and freight-mode selection as the three decisions that actually determine whether a low-density, fragile export order arrives intact and within margin, all managed in-house.
Export-grade fragile packing
Individual wrapping for brass, ceramic, and glass items; custom wooden crates for marble, stone, and large furniture; corner protection, bracing, and multi-layer cushioning; moisture barriers and desiccants for textiles and wood; ISPM-15 compliant crating and pallets; fragile and orientation markings throughout.
Freight mode & consolidation strategy
LCL consolidation for small and mixed handicraft orders; FCL for full furniture containers and bulk orders; volumetric-weight optimisation on low-density cargo; air freight for urgent, high-value, or sample shipments; buyer's consolidation handling for multiple suppliers; door-to-door and door-to-port options.
ISPM-15 wood treatment & fumigation coordination
Accredited heat treatment or fumigation and the stamped ISPM-15 certificate are arranged before dispatch, so wood packaging and solid-wood products aren't refused or fumigated at the importer's expense on arrival.
Phytosanitary & CITES compliance screening
aterials are screened at the quotation stage for wildlife-protection restrictions (CITES, Wildlife Protection Act) and phytosanitary certification requirements, with permits or compliant alternatives advised before the order ships.
Export incentive documentation
RODTEP and duty drawback claims, plus EPCH-registered exporter documentation, are prepared and filed against the Shipping Bill as a standard part of every export clearance.
On-ground craft-cluster support
An office in Moradabad puts the team inside the handicraft cluster itself, able to supervise packing and respond directly, not coordinating remotely from a port city.

Fumigation, ISPM-15 & CITES: The Compliance Steps That Decide Whether Your Cargo Clears
The single most common reason handicraft and furniture shipments are held, fumigated at destination at the exporter’s cost, or seized is a wood-treatment or wildlife-material compliance gap. These rules are set by the destination country and are non-negotiable. Clearfast manages each before the cargo leaves India.
ISPM-15 wood packaging treatment
All solid-wood packaging crates, pallets, dunnage, and solid-wood products must be heat-treated or fumigated and stamped with the ISPM-15 mark. Untreated wood is refused or fumigated on arrival at the importer’s expense. Clearfast arranges accredited treatment and the stamped certificate before dispatch.
Phytosanitary certification
Destination countries frequently require a phytosanitary certificate for wood, bamboo, cane, and natural-fibre products, certifying that the goods are pest-free. Clearfast coordinates inspection and certification with the plant-quarantine authority.
CITES & wildlife-material clearance
Handicrafts using bone, horn, shell, ivory substitute, or protected timber may fall under CITES or the Wildlife Protection Act. Clearfast identifies restricted materials at the quotation stage and advises on permits or alternatives before the order is shipped, avoiding seizure.
Export incentive & EPCH documentation
Handicraft exporters registered with EPCH (Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts) and furniture exporters can claim RODTEP and drawback. Clearfast prepares the documentation and files claims against the Shipping Bill as standard.
Country-of-origin & buyer documentation
Certificate of Origin, GSP/FTA preference certificates where applicable, and buyer-specific documentation (fair trade, sustainability) are prepared so the consignment clears destination customs without query.
Export packing & container stuffing
Export-grade fragile packing and supervised container stuffing, weight distribution, bracing, and load planning ensure the cargo survives transit intact, whether LCL or full container.
Handicraft & Furniture Cargo Types: What Clearfast Exports from India
India’s handicraft and furniture exports span dozens of materials and craft traditions, each with distinct packing, fumigation, and compliance needs. Clearfast handles the full range from the major craft clusters of Moradabad, Jodhpur, Saharanpur, Jaipur, and beyond.
Brassware & metal handicrafts
Moradabad · HS 83 · High-value fragile
Hand-beaten brass, copper, and metal décor lamps, vases, planters, and tableware. Prone to denting and surface damage; requires individual wrapping and rigid containment.
Wooden furniture & carvings
Jodhpur / Saharanpur · ISPM-15 fumigation
Solid and reclaimed-wood furniture, carved panels, and décor all solid-wood items and wood packaging require ISPM-15 heat treatment or fumigation with a stamped certificate before export.
Marble, stone & inlay work
Agra / Jaipur · Heavy & brittle
Marble tabletops, inlay handicrafts, sculptures, and stoneware are heavy, brittle, and edge-sensitive, demanding custom crating and careful weight distribution within the container.
Ceramics, glass & pottery
Khurja / Jaipur · Shock-sensitive
Blue pottery, ceramic décor, and decorative glass are highly shock-sensitive, requiring multi-layer cushioning and fragile-handling markings throughout the chain.
Textile & soft handicrafts
HS 57 / 63 · Moisture-sensitive
Rugs, dhurries, cushion covers, and embroidered décor are moisture- and pest-sensitive, requiring dry, sealed packing and occasionally fumigation for natural fibres.
Material-restricted & CITES items
Bone · Horn · Shell · Certain woods
Handicrafts incorporating bone, horn, shell, or protected timber species may require CITES permits or wildlife-clearance certificates. Clearfast advises on restrictions before shipment to prevent seizure at export or destination.

Regulatory & Documentation Expertise ISPM-15, CITES, Plant Quarantine & Export Incentives
Handicraft and furniture export sits at the intersection of international wood-packaging standards, wildlife-protection law, plant quarantine requirements, and export incentive schemes. Clearfast’s team is trained across all of these, managing the documentation chain that keeps a shipment compliant at both ends.
ISPM-15 International wood packaging standard
The international standard governing wood packaging material used in trade requires heat treatment or fumigation and a stamped, recognised mark before solid-wood crates, pallets, and dunnage can cross borders.
Plant Quarantine Authority Phytosanitary certification
Destination countries frequently require pest-free certification for wood, bamboo, cane, and natural-fibre products. Clearfast coordinates inspection and certification directly with the plant quarantine authority.
CITES & Wildlife Protection Act Restricted materials
Governs trade in items incorporating bone, horn, shell, ivory substitute, or protected timber species. Permits may be required, or the material may be prohibited outright, screened before the order ships, not after.
EPCH Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts
Registration with EPCH can unlock additional scheme benefits for handicraft exporters specifically, alongside the standard RODTEP and drawback incentives available to furniture exporters generally.
Certificate of Origin & GSP/FTA preference
Country-of-origin and trade-preference documentation prepared so shipments qualify for reduced or zero duty under applicable free trade agreements at the destination and clear customs without a documentation query.
What Happens When Handicraft & Furniture Cargo Is Handled by a Non-Specialist Agent
Handicraft and furniture exports fail in predictable ways with a general forwarder: broken cargo, fumigation holds, seized wildlife-material goods, or freight bills that wipe out the order's margin. Each is avoidable with the right handling.
Without deadline-aware logistics
Untreated wood held at the destination:
Furniture or wood packaging without ISPM-15 treatment is refused entry or fumigated on arrival at the importer’s cost delay, expense, and a damaged buyer relationship.
Restricted material seized:
A handicraft incorporating bone, horn, shell, or protected timber ships without a CITES permit and is seized at export or destination, total loss of the consignment.
Fragile cargo arrives broken:
Brass dented, marble cracked, ceramics shattered under poor packing or careless stuffing; buyer rejects, claim disputed, reputation hit.
Freight cost wipes out margin:
Low-density furniture shipped on the wrong mode or as poorly-consolidated LCL volumetric weight inflates the bill beyond the order’s margin.
With Clearfast
ISPM-15 treated & stamped before dispatch:
Clearfast arranges accredited heat treatment or fumigation and the stamped certificate before the cargo leaves India; the consignment clears destination plant quarantine without a hold.
Materials screened at the quotation stage:

Export-grade packing & supervised stuffing:
Item-level wrapping, custom crating, and load-planned container stuffing mean the cargo arrives saleable the way it left the workshop.
Mode & consolidation optimised:
Clearfast selects LCL, FCL, or buyer’s consolidation and optimises volumetric weight, keeping freight cost proportionate to cargo value.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Solid-wood products and packaging (crates, pallets, dunnage) must be heat-treated or fumigated and stamped with the ISPM-15 mark before export. Untreated wood is refused entry or fumigated at the importer’s expense on arrival. ClearFast arranges accredited treatment, certification, and phytosanitary certificates where required.
ISPM-15 is the international standard requiring wood packaging material to be heat-treated or fumigated and stamped with a recognised mark. It applies to solid-wood crates, pallets, and dunnage, and often furniture and carvings manufactured from wood like plywood are generally exempt. ClearFast confirms requirements per destination.
It depends on the material. Items with bone, horn, shell, or protected timber may fall under CITES or India’s Wildlife Protection Act, requiring permits or facing outright prohibition. Shipping without clearance risks seizure and total loss. ClearFast screens materials at the quotation stage and advises on permits or alternatives.
It depends on order volume and density. Furniture is low-density, so freight is usually charged on volumetric weight. Small or mixed orders are typically most cost-effective as LCL consolidation, while bulk orders justify FCL. ClearFast assesses each order, including buyers’ consolidation across multiple suppliers.
Fragile handicrafts are protected at the item and container level, individually wrapped with corner protection and cushioning, with marble or stone in custom wooden crates. Container stuffing is supervised with planned weight distribution and bracing so nothing shifts, with fragile and orientation markings applied throughout.
Exporters can typically claim RoDTEP and duty drawback against the Shipping Bill, refunding embedded duties and taxes, with rates varying by product category and HS code. Exporters registered with EPCH may access additional scheme benefits. ClearFast files RoDTEP and drawback claims as standard on every export clearance.
